Cub Scout Glossary

Below you will find many common acronyms and words used in scouting.  Many positions in a pack or troop have assistants and the acronym will start with the letter “A” (ADL = Assistant Den Leader)

B&G Annual BSA Birthday banquet, see “Blue and Gold”
Badge Patches that are part of uniform
Belt Loop Award for completing activities around a certain topic. Thin metal squares that
are placed on a boys uniform belt.
Blue and Gold Blue and Gold Banquet. Our annual celebration of the BSA Birthday. Fun, fun fun!

CC Committee Chairperson – Runs the Chair, the power of the pack.
Class A Uniform Different types of activities require different uniforms. Class A is a complete
uniform, blue shirt, neckerchief, hat. This should be worn to most pack and den
meetings, fund-raising, Blue and Gold banquet, etc.
Class B Uniform Different types of activities require different uniforms. This is an activity uniform,
a scout polo shirt or Tshirt often worn for camp or for other activities.
CM Cubmaster – The face of the pack.
Council A group of Districts make up a Council.
CTW See Camp Tom Wooten
DD District Director, professional scouter
DE District Executive, professional scouter
Den The smallest subdivision in scouting, usually 6-8 boys of the same rank
Den Chief A Boy Scout who helps a Den Leader direct the activities of a Cub Scout den.
District A subdivision of a council.
DL / Den Leader One of the most important roles in scouting. This is a registered adult who organizes
and leads a den of Cub Scouts
GLSR Griffith League Scout Reservation – home to COPE Training
Knots Awards for adults (and in some cases the boys) for completing service and other
requirements, our den leaders and other volunteers work hard and deserve
recognition
Lad n Dad Our packs annual bake off.
LPSR Lost Pines Scout Reservation – our councils primary Boy Scouts camp.
Merit Badge WEBELOS and Boy Scouts award for completing more difficult actives.
OA or Order of the Arrow A national brotherhood of scout honor campers of the Boy Scouts of America.
Members are elected by their peers after meeting basic requirements of camping
knowledge and experience. Boys and adult leaders can be elected to the OA.
The OA motto of “Cheerful Service” indicates their purpose. They are often
found improving scout camps, running council events, and providing service
to the scouting community.
Pack A grouping of dens are organized into a pack, led by the Cubmaster
Pack Picnic Our final pack meeting of the year. Consider this graduation from the current
rank to the next.
Patch Award for brag vest. This is not an official part of the uniform.
Patrol Boy Scouts: The Patrol is the basic unit within a troop. Made up of 6-10 scouts
who camp, cook and eat together. They work as a team at various activities and
events. They elect their own leader
PL The elected leader for the patrol. An Assistant Patrol Leader can be elected or
appointed by the PL to help in running the patrol.
Popcorn Our Annual fundraiser
PWD Pinewood Derby – a race where the boys build their own cars with adult
supervision and help. One of the most popular events every year
Roundtable Monthly meeting for leaders to exchange ideas, fellowship, and, a few
announcements that is run by the district.
RR Round Rock, TX
RR The Raingutter Regatta is similar to the Pinewood Derby or the Space Derby
except that the models are miniature sail boats. Although the seas are only
10-foot lengths of raingutter filled with water, and the ships a mere 6 inches
long, the race is a very exciting event. Each boy builds his own boat with
supervision and help from parents or other family members. He also provides
the wind for the sail with his own lung power.
Scout Shop Located at the Council offices in Pfluggerville. This is where you will get your
uniforms, books, and other scouting toys.
Scouter Any registered adult leader.
Scouting for Food National Good Turn: Every year, Scouts collect food for the fight against
hunger. The food is turned over to local food banks for distribution to needy
families. Scouting for Food is a national “Good Turn” of the Boy Scouts of
America.
SD The Space Derby is similar to the Pinewood Derby or Raingutter Regatta
except that the models are miniature ‘rockets’ — propeller-driven and
powered by two or three rubber bands — that travel along a heavy
monofilament fishing line. The rockets are carved by the boys, with the
guidance of their parents or other family members.
SM Scoutmaster: Adult leader who trains and guides the youth leaders in carrying
out the scouting program. One or more Assistant Scoutmasters (ASM) help
the Scoutmaster and are often assigned specific roles and duties.
SNS Show and Sale – the first face of our annual popcorn fundraiser.
SPL Senior Patrol Leader: The senior most elected youth leader of the troop. The
SPL is in charge of the troop at all functions and activities. He appoints one
or more assistants (ASPL) to help him in running the troop.

YIS Yours in Scouting – a common closing to written correspondence
YPT or Youth Protection Training A 30-minute interactive video presentation and training program that is offered
several times a year. Each unit should encourage all leaders to attend one of
these sessions that provide valuable information on how to recognize child
abuse, how to set up safe guards, and how to report suspected abuse. The
training can also be done online.
